Small initiation can make big differences” This is my most important take-away lesson after studying social work for the past 6 years. I started my social work journey in the year 2015 after Nepal was hit by the massive earthquake which killed more than ten thousand lives. As I witnessed and experienced crisis from a personal level, I immediately realised that I wanted to do something for the people and with the people. My journey with Make a Difference Nepal started soon after I joined my undergraduate degree where I had the opportunity to put my theoretical knowledge into practice. While working as a “Program Coordinator” for MDN I witnessed a wide range of issues in Nepalese communities; both rural and urban; and how it affected the disadvantaged population. During my tenure, our team were able to address those issues and work on it on the very grassroot level. Whether it was teaching women to make sanitary pads from available resources or teaching pottery and clay arts to children, MDN always had a unique way of solving community issues. Leaving such a beautiful team and community behind was a big decision for me but I believe with more exposure under my sleeve, I would be able to contribute more to the community. I took my leap of faith and travelled to Australia in the early 2020 and have recently completed my Master of Social Work degree from Australian Catholic University. I am currently working in the role of a Support Coordinator for a Disability Service Provider in Brisbane, Queensland. As I’m working with people from refugee and migrant background; I continue to follow the legacy that MDN has established i.e “Inspiring to enact and implement”. Small initiation can become source of inspiration to many which can then create a ripple effect across the society. I believe MDN provided me with a platform to make small but significant ripples in the Nepalese community.
